This book focuses on the impact of the Afghanistan-Pakistan conflict and recent large-scale military operations against Taliban militants and international jihadis on the neighboring independent Central Asian states. The study will provide policymakers with comprehensive historical background, analyses, and policy options for developing regional security strategies that closely engage countries of Central Asia in resolving the Afghanistan-Pakistan issue.

Kamoludin Abdullaev and Shahram Akbarzaheh Historical Dictionary of Tajikistan

The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Tajikistan is extensively updated and substantially expanded. It examines this country through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, a 40 pages-long introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions, as well as significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects. The authors also expanded the component related to foreign policy and finance. It is an extremely useful aid in understanding the current situation in Tajikistan .

Книга представляет собой первую в постсоветской историографии попытку изучения истории среднеазиатской эмиграции советского периода. Основное внимание в работе уделено почти миллионной массе таджиков, узбеков, туркменов, киргизов, казахов, а также русских, вытесненных революцией за рубежи своей родины – в Афганистан, Западный Китай, Иран, Британскую Индию и Турцию в 1917-1934 гг. Заключительная глава затрагивает также основные моменты военной эмиграции 1941-1945 гг., период “холодной войны”, войны в Афганистане 1980-х гг. и доводит исследование до начала 2000-х гг.

Accord. Politics of compromise The Tajikistan Peace Process

In comparison with many of the ‘internal’ wars of the late twentieth century, the inter-Tajik conflict is notable both for its rapid escalation to war in 1992 and for its relatively quick conclusion through a negotiated settlement reached in June 1997. This issue of Accord documents these events, provides insight into the main parties to the conflict, describes the official aiq informal initiatives that comprised the peace process, and explores issues around implementation of the agreements and the challenges of post-conflict peacebuilding.

Integrating Political Islam in Central Asia: the Tajik Experience

Tajikistan has undergone the most painful state building of all the former Soviet republics of Central Asia. Beginning in 1991, the country experienced a rapid rise in political activism, followed by civil war, an internationally led peace process, the integration of opposition forces into government, disarmament of former combatants, and redistribution of power among warring political factions. In general, Tajikistan is widely considered an important success story of internationally supported peace building. Today this country is ready to pay a robust price to avoid further violence after the 1992-1997 conflict that resulted in an estimated 50,000 dead and disappeared.[i] The implications for integrating political Islam into a pluralist system, however, have been more mixed.
